Experimental Music : “The Devil and The Deep Blue Sea”

Jiradej Setabundhu

Tanggal: Jumat, 27 Juli 2018
Waktu: 20:00-22:00 WIB
Tempat: Teater Kecil, Taman Ismail Marzuki

The piece is inspired by many of my childhood experiences. First is the music of the Beatles, whose melody, harmony and lyrics have provided a bottomless well of inspiration. Another influence is the traditional Thai music where the notes are decorated and embellished, creating an ephemeral, haunting melody that is most apparent in the vocal part. Lastly, I have always been fascinated by the myths and legends of the old world, and these have found their way into my work. Special thank to Prinda Setabundhu for her help with the visual side as well as for being my “Siren.”

Jiradej Setabundhu studied music with Bruce Gaston at Chulalongkorn University, Thailand and worked as a guitarist and composer with the Fong Nam Ensemble. He attended the University of Southern California for his master’s degree, studying with composer Donald Crockett, and received his doctoral degree in composition from Northwestern University. His teachers include M. William Karlins, Marta Ptaszynska, Amnon Wolman, Michael Pisaro and Stephen Syverud. Currently he is the vice president for academic affairs at the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music, Thailand.
